Judgment reserved in land appeal by ex-Caroni workers
Judment was reserved in the Appeal Court matter between the State and the ex-workers of Caroni (1975) Ltd yesterday, after attorneys for the former workers responded to claims that the judge who heard the matter was biased against the government.
Yesterday, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, SC, who is representing the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Rights Association, and who is seeking the interest of some 8,000 former Caroni employees, made submissions in the Appeal Court before Chief Justice Ivor Archie and Justices Peter Jamadar and Nolan Bereaux.
Maharaj, Rikki Harnanan and Vijaya Maharaj are representing the workers. Maharaj told the judges that in the appeal against the ruling of Justice Lennox Deyalsingh on December 7, 2007, the State must show a link between his (Deyalsingh) apparent bias against the government and articles that he wrote condemning the government.
Maharaj submitted that the comments were against the Governance of the country and not particularly the People's National Movement (PNM).
